I need advice. Harrison is 20months. He's in the 4th percentile for weight. Douglas was the same at that age. Travis probably is too. :-) Anyway, I'm having trouble with him eating all of a sudden. He used to (before his throw up bug in Feb) eat super well (and still only 4th percentile). He ate fruit, veggies, and generally anything you put in front of him. Now he sucks. Seriously. He won't eat the fruit he used to. He won't eat bagels, oatmeal, or other breakfast food he used to. He is stubborn too. With Douglas I could have said at 20months, eat it or go hungry and he would have eaten it. Harrison has been sitting at the table for 1 hour with his breakfast in front of him. I don't know what to do. Do I let him sit there some more or get him down and he can't eat anything until snack time? At snack time do I try to get him to eat his breakfast again? That will result in more tears and I don't think he'll eat it. Or b/c of his low percentile for weight, do I just offer him anything he will eat? Douglas was the same weight and Travis is itty bitty too so I kind of think I shouldn't cater to him. AHHHHHH!!! What do I do?

One book I might recommend is Child of Mine by Ellyn Satter. I thought it was pretty reasonable and they recommended that book to use when Andrew wouldn't eat solid foods (the book wasn't very helpful on that, but still ...). Andrew's best little friend is very small for his age, probably even lower percentile, and even though they tried to push food on him continually it never seemed to make a difference. Especially given the history, I would guess that's just their size. Someone has to be small, right? So, I would go with your gut and not worry too much about him dropping further in percentiles. But food issues are SO frustrating. Good luck.
I have no answers, we're going through the same thing with Sadie, but she's still so little so I think she's okay.
I always hear they won't starve and they'll eat if they're hungry. for our girls, if they don't finish a meal, i leave it out and they can't eat anything else (snack time) until they finish it... but they are older, I wouldn't start it with a 20 month old.
So, I'm no help.
I don't know that I'd be any help either. Sometimes when Will hasn't eaten breakfast well I have him miss out on SOME of his favorite snack foods so he'll eat a bigger lunch. I don't know if it's right but he doesn't complain too much. I, however, have been known to cater meals to my child...not always but sometimes.
Don't cater!!! Just offer him his food later. Seriously, don't give him crap just because he will eat it!! He will eventually eat something. He has to. And remember that kids go through phases of eating more and less. As long as he isn't losing weight then I think you are okay. After all, Travis is still alive and well and he was probably that itty bitty as well.
