Good and Bad news

Today ECI (Early childhood intervention) came for Douglas' 6 months review. They have been coming once a week since May and twice a month from Jan-May. Anyway, the speech pathologist came along today for the review. She just asked me a bunch of questions to "grade" him and see what month he is functioning at. Needless to say Douglas doesn't qualify for ECI anymore b/c he was exactly right for his age (20 months). I was surprised to hear that. I knew that he's been chatting and learning new words up a storm lately but I still thought he'd be at least 1 month behind, which is all he needed to keep ECI services. In January when they graded him he was functioning at a 10 month level (he was 14 months.) So he's made up for 10 months of language development in 6 months. Does that make sense? Anyways, I'm super thankful right now. I prayed for his proper language development every night. I've asked Heavenly Father that he be caught up by the time the baby is here and lo and behold he is!!!

That was the good news, the bad news is that I'm a terrible mom. At least that's how I've been feeling the past couple days but DEFINITELY today. Douglas came down with a fever last Thursday and Friday. It was gone Saturday but this weekend and today he's been extra whinny (which makes for an impatient mom). When he is sick he only wants his daddy, which is endearing in a way. I'm happy that he loves his Daddy so much and that Travis is such an amazing father that Douglas wants his comfort during those times. It makes me slightly sad but happy nonetheless. Well, for the past week Douglas has also been saying "Pee Pee" in a sad tone and pointing to his diaper. I was thinking perhaps he is ready for potty training. However, 4 times this weekend he's screamed it like in pain. So today after impatiently dealing with his whininess and having him scream out in pain again, I took him to the doctor right before they closed. She said it was unlikely for a circumcised boy over 3months to have a UTI but they would get a sample of urine from a catheter just in case. Oh, how he screamed and I cussed. Yes, I did under my breath b/c I felt so terrible and so angry at myself for letting this happen. Anyway, they couldn't get a sample so the rest of tonight he occasionally screamed out Pee Pee and touched his diaper. I feel awful! In a couple of days if he's still doing this they want me to come back and they'll put a cup on him to get a sample. I'm just praying it completely goes away. The poor kid. Anyways, that's it.

That's great that he's caught up on his speech so quickly! What a relief that must be.

Now I'm no doctor, but with Spencer's kidney problems his urologist has us trained to be on constant guard for UTI signs and those sound like symptoms to me. Fever, frequent painful urination, you can also check to see if his urine smells funny (I know, a fun thing to check). Poor Douglas. Whether it's one or not, I hope he feels better soon!

Oh yeah, and don't feel like a horrible mom, because you are NOT one! I'm terrible about waiting to take my kids to the doctor and just hoping they'll get over it. One time Janelle had pink eye for like a week (which I didn't know) before I took her in. I felt so bad!

Remember how unlikely it was for Dougie to have Kawasaki Diseas? Even if it is unlikely that it is a UTI that doesn't mean it can't be one. I agree that you should keep watching and make sure that if the symptoms don't clear up that you take him back. Don't feel bad. It is better to get him treated than not to. Just like with the Kawasaki, it wasn't fun but it had to be done.

We have a nephew that was having problems similar to those. Only he didn't end up having a UTI he had one of my sister-in-law's long hairs wrapped around his penis. It was cutting off circulation and causing him a lot of pain. I feel so bad for little boys when it comes to that. I hope Douglas gets better soon.

If it makes you feel any better I wouldn't have caught on either! So I would have to say you are a terrific MOM! Speech news is great!
How are you feeling?

I'm glad he's caught up! I want to hear him talk! :)

And you're definitely not a bad mom at all! We all have bad moments, but it doesn't make you a bad mom. I hope he feels better soon!

Oh my gosh, Maddison just dealt with the same thing so I guess that means we can be bad moms together. Stuff just sneaks up on ya sometimes.

I'm pretty darn sure that you didn't just "let it happen". But if you want to keep blaming yourself for it and feeling like a horrible person I guess you can.
